A global effort to restore Palmyra

CULTURAL HERITAGEPOST- CONFLICT RECOVERYARCHAEOLOGY

11/17/2025

Heritage experts are calling for an international task force to lead the rehabilitation of Palmyra, Syria’s iconic ancient city, following years of destruction by ISIS. At a recent conference organised by UNESCO and the Aliph Foundation in Switzerland, officials, antiquities authorities, and Syrian residents emphasised the urgent need to restore the Palmyra Museum, repair key archaeological sites, and return looted artefacts, while actively involving the local community. The main goal is to reconnect the ancient site with the modern city, revitalising both cultural heritage and economic life. Set to begin in January 2026, this initiative will start with the search for a museum operator and strategic planning for sustainable site management. Palmyra’s restoration could represent a successful recovery of invaluable heritage and serve as real model for post-conflict cultural resilience through international cooperation.
