A Sculpture Full of Questions

Created by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux in 1873, Pourquoi naître esclave? is considered one of the most famous 19th-century sculptures representing a Black woman. But there is a surprising detail: it is not a portrait. The figure is not a real person, but an imagined subject created by the artist.

Made around twenty years after the abolition of slavery in the French colonies, the sculpture reflects the way the 19th century looked back at slavery, freedom, and human suffering. Her expression, full of emotion and strength, invites us to think about the relationship between art, history, and representation.

This sculpture is fascinating because it reminds me that artworks do not only show people, they also reveal the ideas, questions, and perspectives of the time in which they were created.
