Gaza’s archaeological destruction cannot erase Palestinian culture

Since October 7, 2023, Gaza has seen an alarming increase in the destruction of its historical and cultural sites. Archives, libraries, monuments, museums, and excavations have been targeted, often deliberately, according to the UN and UNESCO.
Recent data:
- 226 of 316 archaeological sites in Palestine damaged
- 53% of Gaza’s cultural assets damaged or destroyed
- Historic sites like the Pasha Palace, St. Hilarion Monastery, and Al Mat’haf Museum attacked or looted.
As often happens, this is more than the loss of artifacts, it is an assault on memory, history, and the cultural identity. For this reason, protecting cultural heritage is a fundamental responsibility under international law, particularly in times of conflict.
Initiatives like the exhibition “Treasures Saved from Gaza- 5,000 Years of History” at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris show that Palestinian culture endures. Preserved in Geneva and now on display in Paris, these artifacts testify to the richness, complexity, and resilience of a history that cannot be erased.
A reminder: protecting heritage is protecting a people’s dignity and history!
