For more than 500 years, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa has fascinated the world with her mysterious smile and unforgettable gaze. But there is one curious detail many people notice: she has no visible eyebrows.
If you look closely at the painting in the Louvre, the skin above her eyes appears completely smooth, with no trace of hair. Yet modern digital scans suggest that the original pigment of the eyebrows may still exist beneath the surface, hidden by layers of time and restoration.
Why did they disappear? We may never know for certain... Perhaps it was caused by the aging of the painting, or maybe Leonardo intentionally left them out to create a softer and more mysterious expression.
But this small absence may also be part of the magic behind her famous gaze. Without strong lines defining her face, her eyes create the illusion that the Mona Lisa is looking at you, no matter where you stand.
Leonardo’s genius was not only in what he painted, but also in what he left open for us to discover.
