Napoli Contemporanea with Mahama's Voyageur

Designed as a passage between city and port, Piazza Municipio has never asked you to pause. Now, you have no choice.

Three large handcrafted wooden boats now stand at the centre of the square, the one that opens directly onto Naples' port. The work is called Voyageur, the latest commission in Napoli Contemporanea, curated by Vincenzo Trione. Ibrahim Mahama, born in Tamale, Ghana, and currently ranked #1 in the Art Review Power 100, built them using methods still practised by craftsmen in his home country. The tallest reaches eight metres and you cannot walk past without stopping.

For centuries, Naples has been a crossroads where different cultures meet, and Voyageur wants to remind us that this history of open exchange is something to protect, not fear.

This is not Mahama's first artwork with Naples. A residency in 2020 brought him to the abandoned Italsider steelworks at Bagnoli, and the work that followed entered the MADRE Museum's permanent collection. That earlier chapter looked inward at what the city had left behind. Voyageur shifts the view toward the water. By pointing out to sea, the boats reference a horizon that has always brought Naples both opportunity and risk, making their placement a powerful statement.

After Naples, Mahama heads to Paris, where the Fondation Cartier opens a major solo exhibition of his work in October, The Harvest Season. A busy moment for an artist who also runs the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art in Tamale, a space he founded in 2019 to support emerging voices from his region.

Voyageur is on view until mid November 2026. Three boats. A square. The sea just beyond the frame.
